In 1991, I opened a small necktie shop in Washington, D.C.’s Union Station. Thirty-five years later, I’m working alongside my son in Reston Town Center, helping men look and feel their best for some of the most important moments of their lives.
It’s been quite a journey. And as we celebrate Davelle Clothiers’ 35th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to own a family business, the relationships we’ve built, and the community that has supported us along the way.
When I opened Timeless Ties in 1991, we had a simple offer: buy one tie, get two free. It was an immediate success, and before long, we expanded to Reston Town Center.
Our customers began asking where they could buy the suits I was wearing. So I started designing suits, expanded our collection, and eventually created my own clothing lines. In 2001, we officially became Davelle Clothiers.
Over the years, we’ve moved locations, navigated economic downturns, adapted to changing fashions, and continued to refine our approach to men’s clothing.
One thing has remained consistent throughout those 35 years: our commitment to helping men develop their personal style through exceptional clothing and personal service.
Explore our history and see how Davelle has evolved over 35 years.
Davelle has always been a family affair. When my son Dave Jr. was just 10 years old, he would help price merchandise at home while watching Saturday morning cartoons. As he grew up, he took on more responsibilities, learning the business from the ground up.
He eventually left to pursue an opportunity with Nike at its world headquarters in Oregon. It was an incredible experience that gave him a new perspective on business and retail. But after starting a family of his own with his wife, Erica, he decided to return to his roots and rejoin Davelle.
Today, we work side by side, combining my decades of experience with his fresh ideas and business expertise.
As a father, there’s something particularly rewarding about watching your son grow into a successful businessman, husband, and father himself. And there’s tremendous pride in knowing that the business I’ve spent my life building is in capable hands as we prepare for the next generation.
When you support a family-owned business, you’re supporting far more than the family whose name is on the lease.
You’re helping us employ our talented team of wardrobe designers, stylists, tailors, administrative professionals, accountants, and the many other people who contribute to our success.
These are skilled professionals who take tremendous pride in their work. They have families, responsibilities, and aspirations of their own. Your decision to shop at Davelle helps us provide meaningful employment while continuing to invest in the expertise and service our customers have come to expect.
That support extends beyond our store. We work with vendors, craftspeople, service providers, and other businesses that help keep our operation running.
Every purchase has an impact that reaches much further than our doors in Reston Town Center.
One of our proudest traditions is our Annual Trade-In Sale, which celebrated its 30th year in 2026.
For three decades, we’ve partnered with Goodwill to give our customers an opportunity to refresh their wardrobes while helping others in our community.
Customers bring in gently worn clothing, receive credit toward new purchases, and know that the clothing they’ve donated will have a second life.
Through our partnership with Goodwill of Greater Washington, we donate the clothing collected during the event along with a portion of the sale proceeds. These contributions help support employment services, job training, education, and opportunities for people facing barriers to employment.
After 30 years, it’s become one of our favorite traditions. We love seeing our clients participate year after year, knowing that together we’re making a difference.
Perhaps the greatest reward of owning Davelle is the relationships we’ve developed with our clients.
Some of you have been shopping with us for decades. We’ve watched you build careers, grow businesses, get married, raise children, and eventually bring your sons into our store.
We’ve helped you select the perfect suit for a job interview, prepare for a major presentation, dress for your wedding day, and celebrate anniversaries, graduations, and other milestones.
And we’ve been there for the everyday moments, too. Helping you look sharp for the office, feel comfortable at a dinner party, or simply enjoy getting dressed in the morning.
We remember your preferences, your measurements, and the pieces you already own. More importantly, we get to know you as a person.
When you walk into an important meeting feeling confident, that confidence can influence how you carry yourself and how others perceive you. When you feel your best on your wedding day, you’re free to enjoy the occasion and make memories that will last a lifetime.
We like to think that our work has a ripple effect throughout the greater Reston community. Every man we help dress goes out into the world looking and feeling a little more confident, ready to make an impression in his own professional and personal life.
That’s what makes our work so rewarding.
Small, independent businesses like ours thrive because people choose to support them. You have plenty of options when it comes to buying clothing, and we never take your decision to shop with us for granted.
Over the past 35 years, we’ve built something I’m incredibly proud of: a thriving family business, a talented team, lasting relationships, and a place where men can come for expert advice and exceptional clothing.
As we celebrate this milestone and look forward to the next chapter, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to every client, employee, friend, and member of our community who has been part of our journey.
Inviting us to help dress you as you live your lives is our greatest honor and privilege.
Thank you for supporting our family business. We look forward to serving you, your families, and the greater Reston community for many years to come.
